A fountain can be a small accent for a patio or a landscape feature weighing hundreds, if not thousands of pounds. Keep that in mind when comparing retailers.

Cast stone, tiered and wall fountains can demand more logistical thought than a simple plug-in water fountain. Weight, groundwork, electricity access, finish selections and freight costs all may affect your decision.

For purchasers seeking a fountain-centric alternative to a general home marketplace, Outdoor Fountain Pros ranks as this comparison’s best overall choice. The site offers a fountain-specific product range along with guidance selecting dimensions, style and finish. It also has advice for buyers who plan to oversee installation themselves and are working with a landscaper or contractor.

1. Outdoor Fountain Pros: Best Overall Specialist Retailer

Outdoor Fountain Pros is the most fountain-centric of the three sites. Their website is structured around outdoor fountains, featuring specific collections for wall, tiered, garden, patio, modern, cascade and large fountains.

The retailer also sells cast stone, marble, granite, ceramic, and metal fountains. While its current About page claims over 18 years of internet sales, the homepage slightly downplays things with over 17 years. At the least, the retailer has a long history of internet sales.

The practical advantage is specialist selection plus purchase support.

Useful buying features include:

• Cast stone depth: Classic and modern cast stone collections include tiered and wall designs.
• Finish help: Retailer can offer actual physical samples of colors for buyers to view before ordering.
• Shipping policy: Outdoor Fountain Pros advertises free shipping to the lower 48 states.
• Sales-tax policy: The site advertises no sales tax on orders except in Utah.
• Project coordination: Staff can provide installation instructions and work with a buyer’s landscaper.

And that last point is important for big water features. The website talks about product recommendations, directions and coordination with landscapers instead of offering nationwide installation labor with every purchase. With something large and elaborate like a big cast stone design, that allows the consumer to pick out the fountain they want and then provide the model specific details to the contractor working on the site.

For instance, a homeowner designing a tiered fountain for a courtyard can select the style and finish first, then plan the base, access and final location according to the model’s size and weight.

Best for: buyers seeking a fountain expert with an extensive selection and direct purchase advice before installation.

2. Soothing Company: Best Alternative Specialist

Soothing Company is the closest specialist-style alternative in this comparison.

Their outdoor Fountain selection consists of cast stone, wall and tiered fountains. Product pages typically include height/width dimensions, weight, material, finishes available, pump information and assembly instructions. Several cast stone listings include assembly sheets or assembly instructions with step-by-step directions.

It gets its strength from range. Compare wall fountains from compact to grand without going to a generic home site.

Where does it fit best?

Soothing Company works well if you’re a shopper who desires a vast fountain selection and extensive specifications on products prior to purchase. A few of their existing product pages even offer physical color samples to assist you in picking finishes on made-to-order cast stone products.

Independent reviews from customers are positive, but not overwhelmingly so. There are some positive reviews on Trustpilot but also some recent negative reviews complaining about freight delivery and support for extremely heavy orders. If you order a large fountain, consider that freight delivery method and unloading may be something to look into prior to purchase.

Best suited to: buyers looking for a wide specialist alternative who don’t mind double-checking freight and setup requirements for heavier options.

3. Wayfair: Best for Marketplace-Style Comparison

Wayfair approaches the category differently.

Rather than specialising in fountains, it fits them within an overall home and garden market. That allows the consumer to comparison shop amongst water features, patio furniture, planters and other landscaping components.

Product information can be robust as well. The cast stone cascade fountain we reviewed for this comparison provides material, pump, power source, weight, assembly required, installation instructions, warranty and customer reviews all on the product page.

The downside is consistency. Specs, shipping, install directions and return policies differ by item or vendor, so the individual listing matters more than the marketplace name alone.

Best for: Those who enjoy shopping in a marketplace environment and comparing fountains to other outdoor items.

What to Check Before Buying an Outdoor Fountain

Yes, the retailer is important. However, proper planning before installation can make or break how your fountain operates when it gets there.

When you are also shopping for outdoor fountain installation services, be sure to distinguish retail assistance from installation labor. The retailer may give you assembly directions or coordinate with a landscaper but not send an installer to your home.

Before ordering, check:

• Dry cast stone model weight: Some large models weigh hundreds of pounds before adding water.
• Base requirements: Need a level area appropriate for the model specified.
• Power access: Electric pumps need an appropriate nearby power source.
• Delivery method: Heavy fountains can be shipped by freight and may require additional manpower/materials to unload safely.
• Winter care: Freezing climates can require draining, drying, covering or moving components indoors.

Instructions from This Old House on how to install a garden fountain suggest picking a flat area and factoring in distance from an electrical outlet, then checking that the fountain’s base is level during installation. Manufacturer instructions may provide model-specific advice: Henri Studio’s fountain FAQ suggests drying out your fountain for the winter and protecting it from freezes. They also say to bring pumps and other accessories inside.

Site preparation for a small fountain can be simple. With a large tiered or wall fountain pick out the fountain you want first then provide the installer or landscaper with exact measurements before work starts on site.
