Crosstune Music Crossword: How It Works and How to Play

Crosstune turns the daily crossword into a music quiz, with song titles, lyric gaps and album names as clues and a short audio clip for each one. It comes from Flatwhite Studios, the team behind Spotle, and I opened the daily puzzle at crosstune.io without making an account.

What Is Crosstune?

The daily Crosstune puzzle mixes fill-in-the-blank song titles, lyric gaps, album names and artist clues in a small crossword grid. The one I opened on October 3 had 12 clues, six across and six down, plus a byline for whoever made it.

Flatwhite Studios runs the site. Its privacy policy names crosstune.io among the studio’s sites, and the domain was registered in February 2025. Is it safe? Nothing I saw asked for an email or a card, and the menu has Feedback and Privacy links.

How Do the Clues Work?

Each Crosstune clue is either a blank to fill in or a plain label to answer, and each one can come with an audio clip. The clue types I saw were these:

  • Title blanks: a song title with a gap, tagged “[song title]”.
  • Lyric gaps: a quoted line with one word missing.
  • Plain labels: “Song title”, “Album title”, “Artist name” or “Artist initials”.
  • Trivia clues: a few clues that read like a question rather than a blank.

Under the clue list, the audio controls read Previous clue, Play clue and Next clue, with Mute and a volume slider. The page says the snippet comes from Apple Music.

There’s a catch.

The Apple Music link beside the clue is marked “listen now (spoilers)”. Opening the full song can give the answer away, so play the clip first.

How Does Solving Work?

You type letters into the grid, and a timer starts counting the moment the puzzle opens. The Check button offers three scopes, Square, Word or Puzzle, so you can test one letter, one entry or the whole grid.

Reveal sits next to Check.

The archived puzzle I opened for October 1 was titled “Instrument IQ”, and its address ends in a date, ?date=2026-10-01. The grid had 52 letter squares laid over a record graphic, with color-coded clue numbers, and most of its clues asked for an instrument hidden in a song title. The theme shows in the clue wording itself, so a themed day is easier to read than a plain one.

What Are the Themed Puzzles and the Archives?

Crosstune’s Themed Puzzles page is headed “themed puzzles. new every sunday” and lists about 60 puzzles, each with a title and a creator name. The Archives page is a monthly calendar, which at the time of my visit showed October 2026.

The themed titles show how narrow the puzzles get. “King of Pop”, “90’s Hip-hop”, “Iconic Guitar Solos” and “Oops! All Britney” are all on the list, so you can pick an era or an artist you know and skip the rest.

Can You Make Your Own Crosstune Puzzle?

Yes. The Create page says you can build a puzzle, get a link to share it with friends, and keep it in your profile “forever”. It also invites you to submit a puzzle you’re proud of to be featured in the Daily or Themed section.

That explains the bylines. The puzzles carry creator names because people make them.

How Is Crosstune Different From Spotle?

Spotle asks you to guess one hidden artist from six attribute tiles. Crosstune asks you to fill a crossword, with sound as part of the clue. The two share a maker and link to each other in their menus. Crosstune’s menu also links to Harmonies, a music connections game, and to Fermi.gg.

Crosstune FAQ

Is Crosstune free?

I started the daily puzzle without an account or a payment screen. The pages I opened showed no price, but the site could add paid features later.

Does Crosstune play music?

Yes. Each clue can play a short snippet, and the page credits Apple Music. You’ll find controls for play, skip, mute and volume below the clue list.

How often is there a new Crosstune puzzle?

The home screen shows the date of the daily puzzle, and the themed section says it adds one every Sunday. Older daily puzzles sit in the Archives calendar.

Who makes Crosstune?

Flatwhite Studios, LLC, according to the privacy policy on spotle.io. The same studio makes Spotle, Spotle Movies and Harmonies.

Where can I find today’s Crosstune answers?

The site doesn’t publish an answer key, and the Apple Music link is labeled as a spoiler. Hints posted elsewhere go stale once the next puzzle arrives.
